Video Summary
I recently received a message from a friend asking if I would do a quick review of the report he received from his web and SEO company.
I decided to show you this because it’s a real-life view of something quite typical in the world of SEO service providers.
These kinds of companies bill you every month but they don’t really care about your business. They provide reports because they know you want information to prove that they are doing something for the money.
But often, the reports are just smokescreens. They really aren’t doing anything other than generating reports.
In this video I am going to show you the part of this report that proves this company is not doing anything for my friend, other than taking his money.

Hi, I’m Jeffrey Kirk.
I recently received a message from a friend asking if I would do a quick review of the report he received from his web and SEO company.
I want to show part of this report to you because it demonstrates the lack of caring that many SEO firms offer their clients.
Too many people hire an SEO company that does not provide valuable service. The problem is that you do not know what level of service these companies should provide.
While most companies will provide you with regular reporting, it doesn’t help if you don’t understand it. Yet, that is often the case.
They give you reports that make it look like they are doing lots of work for you, but they really aren’t.
The report I am about to show you proves that this company is not doing anything for my friend, other than taking his money.
I’m going to demonstrate this by looking at two different charts. The first is called Top Traffic Sources.
This report shows where people came from right before landing on his website.
The second is closely related and is called Top Referrals. A referral is supposed to be logged when someone clicks a link and ends up on his website.
Top Traffic Sources and Top Referrals provide useful data for an SEO program. As an SEO professional I would want to know these sources.
Depending on the source I might want to encourage more activity from those sources. Or, I might want to boost up another source by modelling what is going right with one of the top sources.
So with that introduction, I will pop up the actual reports and show you how this SEO company has failed my friend.
<Transition to Computer Screen Shot>
Here’s the Top Traffic Sources chart. These first two are expected and normal, where it says google/organic and (direct)/(none). The first line shows that the primary source of visits to the website is from Google via organic search.
That’s great information to have.
That means that 40 visits to this site during this time period happened from legitimate search engine searches.
The second line shows the number of visitors to the site who came directly to the website address or perhaps clicked on a link in their email software.
But the next three sources are useless.
You see, top1-seo-service.com, quit-smoking.ga, and santasgift.ml are spam sources. They are not real. They are not related to this site, and have no real links to this site.
This information does not help. And that’s how I know the SEO company isn’t actually doing any work. If they were they would have eliminated these records because this information doesn’t help them do their job either.
Let’s take a look at the next chart, Top Referrals.
Since search engines and direct access to a site are not referrals, those two methods go away. So the other 3 top traffic sources remain here. They move up to the top. Plus we get two more sources at the bottom, build-a-better-business.2your.site and rusexy.xyz.
Both of these are fake as well. So, the top referrals reported are all fake. And since we only see the top 5 in this report, we don’t know if there are more bad data sets.
Neither my friend, nor his SEO firm, can make any good decisions based on this data.
Without the ability to make good decisions, it is impossible to know what to do to improve the results. And, if you cannot improve the results, then what’s the point in paying for a service!?
In an upcoming post I will show you how to eliminate these bad traffic sources and referrals from Google analytics reporting.
But for now, take a look at your own reports, and if you see some information like this, if you see data that is fake, that has stupid source URLs, then you can make some decisions about your SEO company.
