A hashtag is word or phrase (without spaces) that is immediately preceded by a hash character, # (sometimes called a number sign or pound sign). The hashtag is often used in social media to help group content across a variety of messages, making it easier to search for information on a specific topic.

Any characters can follow a hash symbol, which means you can make up any hashtag you want at any time. No one owns hastags, and there is no mechanism to reserve or register them. So #makeupdozens of them if you want to. (I just searched Twitter and Facebook and found no previous use of #makeupdozens, so you saw it here first.)

In actual practice a hashtag could look like this…

[bctt tweet=“I just read this post about hashtags. Now I can #makeupdozens for myself and my business.”]

If a hashtag becomes popular, and generates consensus around its use, then that topic can be considered as “trending.”

Join the fun. You can start a trend by clicking the text in the box above. Doing so will let you tweet that sentence. Then we can all see how well it works. Of course you can click the buttons to the left as well. Be sure to use #makeupdozens in any post so we can see what happens.

For more information on hashtags, see the infographic below. It gives you many details of the #hashtag and the impact it has on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Google Plus.

You can find hashtags everywhere these days, so you might as well learn how to use them for your own business advantage.
