Hello, my name is Jeffrey Kirk.
Let me ask you a question, how much time do you spend browsing the internet on your phone? Now, compare that to the time you spend browsing the internet using your desktop computer, if you even have one.
Why do I ask? It’s because according to Google, people spend 70% of their time online on their mobile phones. And more than half of all total web visits are currently mobile. Imagine how much revenue you could convert if you could reach a larger audience!
And that brings us to my next question, is your website mobile-friendly? Yes? No? Not sure why it’s important? Well, in this video, we’ll talk about mobile SEO and why it’s important for your website to be optimized for mobile. So keep watching.
Mobile VS Desktop
These days, people are almost always hooked to their devices, and it seems we keep discovering more and more advantages of using our mobile phones for all kinds of transactions.
Let’s face it, we are addicted to our smartphones. People use their phones for everything, and this has dramatically changed our daily lives. Mobile technology continues to change. And it improves the way you can reach your customers and provide your products and services.
According to studies, people search the internet more often using smartphones than on desktop computers. And who can blame them, right? You can take your phone everywhere, and you can browse the internet at any time. With your bulky desktop computer, you have to be right there in front of it to accomplish the exact same search.
Also, according to research, mobile users have a higher chance of buying your product or service compared to desktop users!
Say you’re at the gym and learn from a friend about a handy piece of fitness equipment you could use at home. Do you want to wait until you get home to find out more? No, you whip out your phone for some instant shopping. People want convenience. And if you know that to be true, then take advantage of that fact!
Is Your Website Mobile-Friendly?
If your website is not mobile-friendly yet, then how are you going to reach those who are away from their desktop computers and they’re using their mobile device?
Statistics say 67% of users are more likely to buy from mobile-friendly websites, while 74% are also more likely to return to websites that are mobile-friendly.
As more and more people adapt to using mobile devices more often, you also need to be sure your website keeps up with the times. You don’t want to lose out to a competitor who makes the shift first, do you? If you don’t adjust for mobile, you could lose existing revenue.
Google’s Mobile-First Indexing
If that’s not convincing enough, then let Google convince you… In 2019, Google switched to mobile-first indexing. What does that mean? It means Google uses the mobile version of your website content for indexing and ranking.
If Google has your website indexed, then you have a higher chance to appear in the search results and get seen by your target audience. If not, then your content will be invisible, and users will have a hard time finding you.
That means if you don’t have a site that works for mobile, you not only have a problem with people using your site, but you also show up less in the search results because you are not giving Google what Google wants.
Google’s main focus is user experience. And that means your website must load quickly, without issues, without annoying pop-ups, and with amazing content. And it must work properly on whatever device your visitor is using. I know what you’re thinking, “what should I do to make sure my website is optimized for mobile SEO?”
Okay, first thing’s first. Before you do anything else, you should check to see if your website is actually mobile-friendly. A few weeks ago, I published a video called “Make Your Website Mobile Friendly”. I would encourage you to review that and see how to run the Google Mobile-Friendly test.
Now that your site is mobile friendly, here are some ways to optimize your site for mobile SEO…
Optimize Your Site For Mobile SEO
First, it’s important that your site be able to adjust to the small screen size of a mobile device. You should also have touch-friendly buttons and page elements, as well as a faster download speed.
It is also important to make sure your visitors have a positive experience and that your website does not take too long to respond. When people look for information on their phones, they want it to be fast and easy.
Core Web Vitals
Second, do you know about Google’s core web vitals?
Google introduced a set of performance metrics, essentially a website scoring system, which impacts your ratings in the search results. So, what are the core web vitals? Well, there are three metrics.
The first vital is called Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which measures the time it takes for the largest image or text block to be rendered on the screen. The second vital is called First Input Delay (FID), which measures your site’s ability to interact with users.
And the third vital is called Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), which measures how much your website content moves around the screen as your page is loading. I talked about these in detail in previous videos. I also gave some tips on how to test and improve each of these vitals.
It’s important to improve all 3 of these core web vitals. But in this video, we’ll look at the overall Page Speed. And that’s because page speed is more important for mobile users than desktop users.
If your website doesn’t load fast enough, you will lose traffic faster on a mobile phone than on a desktop. To improve this, you must make your pages load faster!
How do we do that? One of the tools you can use to optimize your website and learn what’s causing it to slow down is the PageSpeed Insights tool. This tool analyzes your website’s performance and then makes recommendations on how to increase the speed.
To use the tool, just paste your URL in the search box, like the one shown here, and then click the analyze button. It gives you a thorough report of your website and what might be slowing its performance.
To improve page speed, avoid uploading large image files to your site. Learn how to correctly reduce image sizes, especially on large files. I spoke more about this in a previous video. You can look for the link here.
Titles And Descriptions
Third, be sure to optimize your title tags and meta descriptions. I cannot stress this enough. Titles and Descriptions are some of the most important parts of your content. And every page of your site needs its own unique title and description.
Titles are the searcher’s first impression of your website. According to Google, they are often the primary piece of information used to decide which of the search results to click. Therefore, the more appealing your title is, the more visitors are attracted to your website.
Think about it. Your page speed doesn’t matter unless people find and visit your website! You need to get their attention and get them to follow through. At the end of the video, I’ll tell you another way to attract more clients. So watch for that.
Keep in mind that search engines usually display about 60 characters of your title. So, make sure to keep it enticing and descriptive, but short. And remember to include your keywords!
A meta description, on the other hand, is just as important as your title tag since it tells the searchers what your content is about. It’s a brief summary of your content displayed in the search results and it’s located below the title tag. If you would like to dig in further about effective title and meta description best practices, check out my previous videos for each of those.
Optimize For Local Search
Fourth, the next thing to keep in mind when doing mobile SEO is to optimize for local search. Mobile searches include a lot of “near me” phrases since mobile users are more interested in looking for local businesses near them.
Maybe as you travel to visit your grandma in another town, you suddenly decide you want to give her fresh flowers. So you grab your phone and you do a search for the nearest (and best) flower shop in that area.
With all the local searches happening in mobile search, you must adapt your strategy to find and reach these users. Use local keywords and choose appropriate categories for your business.
Fifth, if you haven’t done so already, claim and complete your Google Business Profile so your business becomes easily accessible to local searches. I have several videos explaining how to do these things as well. The links are here for easy access.
Improve Your User’s Experience
And, finally, you should focus on how to improve your user’s experience whether on mobile or desktop. A clear SEO strategy will help you reach users that are interested in your services and convert them into revenue. Mobile SEO on its own may feel overwhelming at first, but it’s really just an extension of other optimizations you’ve already performed.
Of course, if you have never done any optimization of any kind, then this may be overwhelming to get started. In that case, start with mobile optimization before looking at desktop optimization. That’s because, as I stated earlier, Google uses your mobile optimization for their search algorithms.
